বীরবল ১৫২৮ সালে যমুনার তীর সংলগ্ন টিকাভানপুরে এক দরিদ্র ব্রাম্মন পরিবারে জন্ম নেন। তার প্রকৃত নাম ছিলো মহেশ দাস। প্রজ্ঞা, কৌতুক ও ন্যায়-বোধের জন্যে তিনি সম্রাট আকবরের রাজসভায় একজন উপদেস্টা হন। তিনি আকবরের সামরিক ও প্রশাসনিক কর্মকান্ডের তত্ত্বাবধায়ক ছিলেন। কথিত আছে তিনি ১৫৮৩ সালে আফগানিস্থান অভিযানে মারা যান। তার মৃত্যুতে সম্রাট খুব মর্মাহত হন এবং কয়েকমাস কাল বেশ কাতর ছিলেন। বাংলা সাহিত্যে রম্যরচনার প্রসার ও ব্যবহার আছে বিস্তর। রম্যরচনা কৌতুকমুখী হলেও এর মুখ্যবানী সমাজের নিয়ম-নীতি ও মূল্যবোধ তুলে ধরা। অনেক সময় রম্যরচনা নিতান্তই হাসি-ঠাট্টা মনে হলেও এর পিছনে রয়েছে সূক্ষ্ চিন্তাবোধ। বাঙালী সমাজে বীরবলের কৌতুক ও প্রজ্ঞার কথা অতি পরিচিত। বীরবলের রচিত কবিতাও ছিলো সমাদৃত। কিন্তু তিনি বেশী পরিচিত তার প্রজ্ঞা ও যুক্তিপূর্ন বাক্য বিনিময়ের জন্যে। সম্রাট আকবরের সাথে বীরবলের কথাপোকথন আজও আমাদেরকে বীরবলের কৌতুক ও প্রজ্ঞার কথা মনে করিয়ে দেয়। এই কথাপোকথনগুলো বীরবলের গল্প হিসাবে পরিচিতি লাভ করে। তিনি হাস্য-কৌতুকের আবরনে কোন ব্যক্তি বা ঘটনার প্রকৃত চিত্র তুলে ধরতেন। In 1528 tikabhanapure Yamuna Bank near Birbal was born in a poor family brammana.
