Buddhism was introduced into Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by Venerable Mahinda, the son of the Emperor Ashoka, during the reign of Sri Lanka's King Devanampiya Tissa and has the longest continuous history of Buddhism of any Buddhist nation, with the Sangha having existed in a largely unbroken lineage since its introduction in the 3rd century BCE. Said to have been made holy by a visit from Lord Buddha, the temple is one of the most ancient and sacred worshipping places for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. More than 75 percent of Sri Lankans are Buddhists, according to the government. The majority of Sri Lankan Buddhists goes to temple and worship on the Poya Day of every month.Today worshippers and pilgrims crowd the temple mostly on Saturdays, Sundays and Poya Days.
