Paper lanterns have had a long and rich history in Asia, especially in China, where they are considered as a symbol of happiness, good luck, prosperity, protection, and as a feng shui cure. Most of them are constructed with a pliable bamboo, wooden, or metal frame and covered with rice paper or Saa paper, while a few others, like the tissue and pompom lanterns, are made merely by folding sheets of paper and hanging them from a string to finish as a lantern decoration. Paper lanterns are also known by the names Chinese lanterns and party lanterns because their designs are, basically, patterned after the rice paper lanterns of China and their popularity as modern party decoration and hanging lantern lights for weddings and special occasions. Another type of Asian paper lanterns are the sky lanterns, or the airborne paper lanterns, which are often released into the night sky for aesthetic effect at lantern festivals.
