Digital Story Cubes is a light application that has been developed for mobile platforms, with pedagogical, academic, therapeutic and creative potential. The purpose of the application is to allow children and older adults alike to better express their own personal narratives, and in turn develop a stronger sense of self through a digital means, be that in a classroom or a more therapeutic setting. Digital Story Cubes is an intuitive electronic means of eliciting and sharing narratives in a spontaneous and pervasive fashion. Based on traditional story cubes, this application differs from existing developments of a similar focus in that it is more widely accessible, and more importantly, requires its users to provide the content from which the story cubes are constructed. As this content can be shared, users can not only construct and share their own narratives, but also participate in a collaborative narrative process. The application works by uploading images from the gallery on the user’s mobile device, and displaying these at random based on the selection of customisable categories. A new set of images is displayed each time the user “shakes” the device, or alternatively, via a button press.
