He promoted a chess set of clearly distinguishable pieces of standardised shape the Staunton pattern that is still the style required for competitions. His chess articles and books were widely read and encouraged the development of chess in the United Kingdom, and his Chess-Player's Handbook (1847) was a reference for decades. The chess openings the English Opening and Staunton Gambit were named for his advocacy of them. Jos Ra l Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. One of the greatest players of all time, he was renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Due to his achievements in the chess world, mastery over the board and his relatively simple style of play he was nicknamed the "Human Chess Machine". Edward Lasker was a leading German-American chess and Go player. He was awarded the title of International Master of chess by FIDE.
