eGFR calculator is used to estimate glomerular filtration rate, which describes the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney. This calculator uses serum creatinine, age, race and gender as variables to calculate eGFR. The formula used in this calculator (186 (175 if IDSM box is checked) x (Creatinine x 0.0113)^(-1.154) x (Age)^(-0.203) x (0.742 if female) x (1.210 if black)) was developed by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study Group. In this formula, when creatinine values are measured by the isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) method, 186 is replaced by 175. The formula has been validated in patients with chronic kidney disease; however it underestimates the GFR in healthy patients with GFRs over 60 mL/min. It has not been validated in acute renal failure.
Serum creatinine should be given as micromol/L (µmol/L). When serum creatinine value is measured by the isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) method, check related box. Age (minimum is 18), gender and race should be selected in order to submit the form. The result is given as GFR in ml/min/1.73m2; corresponding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage and related treatment is indicated.
