Convert feet to meters. Popular belief suggests that the foot was the length of a persons foot. The length of King Henry the firsts foot appears to have been used as a standard measurement for the people of the time. Perhaps many kings changed the standard length of the foot by using their own foot. If this is the case, then the length of foot may have been changed many times. The meter is the standard unit of measurement for the metric system. It was first created in France in 1799. A meter was 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the equator to the north pole. In 1983, the meter was defined to be the distance that is traveled in a vaccum by light in 1/299,792,458 of a second. Meter is also spelled metre.
