The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is an initial (and subsequent) neurological assessment to determine and document a persons state of consciousness. This app can be used by EMS personnel, nurses, and doctors alike as a reference. The scale includes eyes, verbal, and motor criteria with the highest score possible of 15 which represents the more widely used modified version. Defined limits include: (1) Severe, with GCS (2) Moderate, with GCS 9 - 12 (3) Minor, GCS greater than / equal to 13. Scores are usually expressed as "GCS 10 = E3 V4 M3 at 0900 hrs." The GCS can be used in conjunction with other neurologic scoring systems such as APACHE II, SAPS II, and / or SOFA. To assess the recovery from a traumatic brian injury (TBI), the Rancho Los Amigos Scale is typically used in medical treatment facilities.
