POETS:**** Ghalib (Urdu: غالب; Hindi: ग़ालिब) born Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan on 27 December 1797 was a classical Urdu and Persian poet from the Mughal Empire during British colonial rule. Most notably, he wrote several ghazals during his life, which have since been interpreted and sung in many different ways by different people. Ghalib, the last great poet of the Mughal Era, is considered to be one of the most popular and influential poets of the Urdu language.
**** Mir Taqi Mir (Urdu: مِیر تقی مِیرؔ—; Hindi: मीर), whose real name was Muhammad Taqi, was born in Agra, India (then called Akbarabad) in August 1723. Mir was the leading Urdu poet of the 18th century, and one of the pioneers who gave shape to the Urdu language itself. He was one of the principal poets of the Delhi School of the Urdu ghazals and remains arguably the foremost name in Urdu poetry. Ghalib himself acknowledged, through some of his couplets, that Mir was indeed a genius who deserved respect.
**** Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq (Urdu: شیخ محمد ابراہیم ذوؔق; Hindi ज़ौक़) ) was an Urdu poet and scholar of literature, poetry and religion. Born in 1789, he was a poor youth, with only ordinary education, who went on to acquire learning in history, theology and poetics in his later years. Zauq was appointed poet laureate of the Mughal Court in Delhi just at the age of 19. He was a prominent contemporary of Ghalib, and the rivalry of the two poets is quite well known.
**** Daag Dehlvi (Urdu: داغ دہلوی, Hindi: दाग़ देहलवी) was born Nawab Mirza Khan on 25 May 1831. Daag was an outstanding Mughal poet famous for his Urdu ghazals. Belonging to the old Delhi school of Urdu poetry, he wrote romantic and sensuous poems and ghazals in simple and chaste Urdu, minimizing usage of Persian words.
**** Syed Akbar Hussain Rizvi, more popularly known as Akbar Allahabadi (Urdu: اكبر الہ آبادی, Hindi: अकबर इलाहाबादी ) was born in October 1846. The hallmark of his poetry was his sense of humour, whether the poems dealt with love or politics. He also often used English words in his Urdu compositions. Professionally, Akbar retired as a session judge in Allahabad High Court. For his judicial services, British Government of the time awarded him the title of "Khan Bahadur".
