Apps are killed instead of being cached in RAM. Because RAM (as opposed to "disk") requires a continuous refresh of battery power, removing the app from memory will extend battery life.
Developers may find the detailed information on each process helpful and interesting. If you have root access then the device can be restarted, rebooted to recovery, or shut-down.
